Korea's next-generation e-passport, which changed from green to blue, attracted attention not only for its color change but also for its strengthened materials and design that embodies the beauty of Korea. However, the next-generation electronic passport without a resident registration number is difficult to use as an ID card in Korea.

Of course, there is a way to use your passport as identification.

From December 21, 2020, resident registration numbers have been removed from passports to prevent personal information leaks. Due to this, the passport cannot be used alone as a substitute for identification and must be issued with a passport information certificate and used together with the passport to be recognized as identification.

Passport information certificates can also be issued online at Government 24 or an unmanned civil service issuance machine.

In addition, some financial institutions are promoting the continued use of passports as identification through a passport information linkage system.

However, there are some caveats to using your passport as identification. Passports that have expired cannot be used as identification, either new passports or old passports that do not require a passport information certificate.

Not many people want to use their passports as identification, but if you do, you should pay attention to the expiration date. In fact, there was a case where a college student who went to the exam center with an expired passport was asked to leave the exam room.
