In an interview with China's Xinhua News Agency ahead of his visit to Beijing this week, Putin emphasized Russia's commitment to resolving the more than two-year conflict through dialogue and negotiations.

Putin said China's plan and additional "principles" unveiled by Chinese President Xi Jinping last month take into account the factors behind the conflict.

“We are positive about China’s approach to resolving the Ukraine crisis,” he said, adding that “Beijing truly understands the root causes of this conflict and its global geopolitical implications.”

The additional principles that Xi presented during his meeting with German Chancellor Olaf Schott were "realistic and constructive steps to advance the idea of the need to overcome the Cold War mentality," Putin explained. China presented a 12-point document setting out general principles for ending the war more than a year ago but did not go into specific details.

Russia and China declared "unfettered" ties days before Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, but Beijing has so far avoided providing actual weapons and ammunition for Russia's war effort.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zlenskiy's peace plan calls for the withdrawal of Russian troops, restoration of post-Soviet 1991 borders, and accountability for Russia's actions.

A "peace summit" is planned in Switzerland in June, but Russia has not been invited and has dismissed the plan as meaningless, saying talks must take into account "new realities".

China participated in some of the preparatory meetings for the summit, and Ukraine is making great efforts to persuade China to attend.
