In commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Korea and Nepal, President Yoon Seok-yeol and Nepalese Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal exchanged congratulatory messages on the day of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on the 16th.

In his congratulatory message, President Yoon celebrated the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. He praised the close friendly and cooperative relationship that has developed in various fields such as trade, investment, infrastructure, and development cooperation since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1974, and said, "Employment, human exchange, agriculture, etc. “As there is great potential for cooperation in other fields, let us work together to further expand the horizons of cooperation between our two countries,” he said.

Additionally, in his congratulatory message, Prime Minister Dahal praised the cooperation between the two countries for achieving excellent results in various fields based on friendship, cooperation, mutual respect, and goodwill, and expressed hope for further deepening mutually beneficial cooperation in the future.

Nepal is a landlocked country located in the Himalayas in South Asia.

Mountaineers and tourists from all over the world are visiting Nepal to see Nepal's beautiful natural environment and world cultural sites such as Lumbini, the birthplace of Buddha.

Prime Minister Dahal, Nepal's current Prime Minister and Maoist politician, is the head of Nepal's largest political party, the Nepal Communist Party. During his time as a rebel leader, he was better known by his real name, Prachanda, which means 'fierce' in Nepali. Prime Minister Dahal fought a war (Nepal Civil War) with the Nepalese government for about 10 years starting in 1996 and signed a peace agreement in 2006.

He served as the first prime minister from 2008 to 2009 after the end of the monarchy, and again from 2016 to 2017. He returned to the position of prime minister again on December 26, 2022.

Prime Minister Dahal faces the task of ending continued political turmoil and restoring the economy. In particular, political chaos has persisted in Nepal, with the prime minister changing nearly 30 times since 1990, when the multi-party system was introduced. Overcoming this political instability is an important task given to Prime Minister Dahal.

Official exchanges between Korea and Nepal began in May 1969 when they agreed to establish consular relations and signed a consular agreement in July 1969. In June 1972, Korea first established the Consulate General in Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, and in May 1974, diplomatic relations were officially established and the Consulate General was upgraded to an embassy.

Exchanges and cooperation between the two countries are very active, and many Nepalis come to Korea to work. There is a Nepalese community in Korea and there are many restaurants selling Nepali cuisine. Additionally, there are several cases where Nepalis who worked in Korea run Korean restaurants in Nepal.

Since the Employment Permit System (EPS) was introduced in Nepal in 2007, more than 80,000 Nepalese workers have worked in Korea and are considered to have contributed to the development of the Korean economy.
