The Korea Forest Service announced on the 17th that it has joined the 'Mangrove Coalition (MAC)' led by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Indonesia to respond to climate change.

MAC is a multilateral consultative body established to protect and restore mangrove forests in which 22 countries, including Germany, India, and Japan, participate.

Korea has been highly praised for its ongoing mangrove restoration projects in the 2005 Indonesian tsunami-affected areas, as well as Vietnam, Guyana, and Pacific Island countries, and has requested continued participation so that Korea's successful experience in forest restoration can be passed on to the international community. received.

Mangrove forests refer to trees and shrubs that grow naturally along riversides and beaches in tropical and subtropical regions and are known to store 4-5 times more carbon than tropical rainforests on land.

It is an ecosystem that contributes to biodiversity by providing habitats and spawning grounds for animals, while also playing an important role in protecting against natural disasters such as tsunamis and tsunamis. It also contributes to the income of local residents through experiential and eco-tourism.

As the frequency and intensity of natural disasters such as sea level rise and tsunamis are increasing due to the recent abnormal climate, mangrove forests are emerging as a key means of directly preserving the marine ecosystem by effectively absorbing carbon dioxide.

Nam Sung-hyun, head of the Korea Forest Service, said, “We will continue to promote mangrove restoration projects to protect developing countries vulnerable to climate change due to tsunamis and typhoons from natural disasters,” and added, “We will strengthen cooperation with member countries of the Mangrove Alliance to promote disaster management and climate change in the international community.” “We will play a pivotal role in responding to change,” he said.
