President Raisi has been considered the de facto second-in-command after Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei. His death is expected to once again have repercussions in the Middle East situation. In particular, President Raisi's death is expected to increase political instability in the Middle East region, as the country is on thin ice due to the war in Gaza between Israel and Hamas.

Even inside Iran, President Raisi's death is causing great shock. It is expected that domestic chaos in Iran will increase due to the hijab protests and economic difficulties. There is also a possibility that a power struggle may occur again during the succession process.

President Raisi suffered a helicopter crash while returning to Tabriz after attending the completion ceremony of the Giz Galashi Dam held in the northwestern province of East Azerbaijan the previous day. In addition to President Raisi, the helicopter involved in the accident were Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian, Tabriz region cleric Imam Ayatollah Al Hahaha of Friday prayers, and East Azerbaijan Governor Malek Rahmati. According to Refa, a media outlet run by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), a total of nine people were on board the helicopter, including three government officials, including President Raisi, a pilot, and a bodyguard.

The accident helicopter was flying in bad weather, including thick fog and heavy rain, and crashed in the Dismar mountainous area near Bazgun in central East Azerbaijan. After receiving a report of the accident, Iranian authorities dispatched 65 search and rescue teams but had difficulty accessing the site due to bad weather, including thick fog heavy rain, and difficult terrain. A Turkiye Akinci drone discovered a heat source presumed to be the remains of the helicopter that crashed that day, and the coordinates were shared with Iranian authorities, leading to a full-scale search.

According to the Iranian constitution, in the event of the president's death, the vice president shall succeed to the presidency and an election must be held to elect a new president within 50 days. With the death of President Raisi, the presidency will be passed to Mohammad Mokhber, the most senior of Iran's 12 vice presidents, and he will be responsible for preparing for a by-election to elect a new president.
